The whole plant contains the poisonous lobeline and related alkaloids. Poisonings are most common when the plant is used in home medicine. The leaves are sold for use in tea and tobacco as a psychoactive ingredient. Ingestion of the leaves may cause nausea, vomiting, sensory disturbances, dizziness, and convulsions. See also LOBELINE.
