velphoro


Velphoro (sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is a phosphate binder that helps prevent hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood) caused by elevated phosphorus.

Velphoro is used to control phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.

Velphoro may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important information

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use Velphoro if you are allergic to sucroferric oxyhydroxide.

To make sure Velphoro is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis);

  • liver disease;

  • a stomach or intestinal disorder;

  • if you have recently had stomach or intestinal surgery; or

  • if you take thyroid replacement medicine (levothyroxine, Synthroid, and others).

Velphoro is not expected to harm an unborn or nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

This medicine is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How should I take Velphoro?

Take Velphoro exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Velphoro works best if you take it with meals.

The chewable tablet must be chewed or crushed before you swallow it.

While using Velphoro, you may need frequent blood tests.

Store this medicine in the original container at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

What should I avoid while taking Velphoro?

If you also take an antibiotic called doxycycline, take it at least 1 hour before you take Velphoro.

Velphoro side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Velphoro: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Common Velphoro side effects may include:

  • diarrhea; or

  • darker color in your bowel movements.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Other drugs may interact with sucroferric oxyhydroxide, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
