Global stainless steel melt shop output stable in Q1: ISSF

Global stainless steel melt shop production reached 10.366 million mt in the first quarter of this year, up a marginal 0.1% from output of 10.359 million mt in the year-earlier period and up 1% from output of 10.259 million mt in Q4 2014, according to figures released Tuesday by the International Stainless Steel Forum. 

Production in China stood at 5.014 million mt in Q1, down 1.4% from 5.084 million mt in Q1 last year and down 11.6% from 5.67 million mt in Q4 2014. 

Output in Asia outside of China was up, however, at 2.513 million mt -- a 14.2% quarter-on-quarter increase, and up 6% from Q1 last year. 

Production also rose in the Americas, where output of 768,000 mt was up 14.7% year on year and up 7.2% from Q4 levels. 

In the Western Europe/Africa region, Q1 production of 2.007 million mt was down 7.3% year on year but jumped 24.8% from Q4 last year, while in Central/Eastern Europe Q1 output of 64,000 mt was up 0.8% from Q4 but down 9.6% from the first quarter of 2014.
